My Reflexology

‘I feel like I’ve had a reset’

Many clients!

Obviously it’s not just my reflexology but my experience of receiving it and working with clients is mine. Reflexology was my life-changing therapy. I was involved in a serious accident at 15 years which resulted in temporary brain damage and long-term nerve damage. In my early to mid twenties, I sought out therapists to help me manage the after effects; I had chronic pain and lasting nerve issues. It all helped but the effects were dulled rather than sorted.

At an Open University summer school I met a lady who had taken a short course in reflexology and she agreed to a treatment. After an hour, she left me to sleep and that night my body released at a deep level and I experienced the calmest of sleeps. The next day I was able to sit and move more comfortably than I had in years. I believe the therapist and reflexology released the shock, emotion and trauma of the accident to allow all the excellent bodywork I had been receiving to be accepted and for healing to finally take place. I returned home from summer school with the decision to pause my degree to enrol on a diploma in Reflexology. I do not know the name of the lady. She lived in Belgium. She will be unaware of the impact she had in that hour.

Reflexology or foot therapy is found in many traditions: Ancient Egypt, Indigenous Americans, Ayurveda (traditional Indian medicine), Chinese Medicine for example. It is one of the most popular complementary therapies and is founded on the principle that the physical and energetic body is reflected on the feet and hands. As a reflexologist, I connect to a system of pressure points and reflexes in the foot or hand, using thumbs, fingertips and knuckles, to stimulate a response in the body.

When I feel different textures the client may be aware of tenderness, numbness or a sharper ‘pain’ response. Where there is a response or change in texture, I will spend more time ‘working’ on the reflex and surrounding area, just as I do when I work with tight or sore muscles.

Reflexology is one of the most effective therapies to connect to and soothe the nervous system. It is useful in most instances but clients find it particularly helpful for:

  • stress related symptoms
  • fatigue issues
  • mental anxiety & tension
  • muscular pain and trauma
  • hormonal imbalance
  • digestive complaints
  • pregnancy
